상담자의 중년 남성 상담 경험에 대한 질적 연구

Qualitative study on the experience of counselors with middle-aged male clients

본 연구는 중년 남성 내담자를 상담하면서 상담자가 어떤 경험을 했는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 중년 남성을 상담한 경험이 있고, 상담 관련 자격증을 소지한 65명의 상담자를 대상으로 온라인 설문을 실시하였고, 수정된 합의된 질적 연구 방법을 통해 자료를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 상담자가 지각한 중년 남성 내담자의 특성은 ‘호소문제’(‘대인 관계적 어려움’, ‘직장 내 스트레스’, ‘신체 및 정신적 증상’, ‘중년기로 인한 어려움’)와 ‘동기 및 참여도 수준’(‘상담에 대한 동기 수준이 다양함’, ‘자기 개방을 꺼림’, ‘수동적인 참여’)이라는 2개의 영역과 7개의 범주가 도출되었다. 중년 남성 내담자와의 상담 경험은 ‘정서 작업의 어려움’(‘정서 인식과 표현의 어려움’, ‘정서 작업에 대한 방어’), ‘정서 작업의 효과적인 방법’(‘판단하지 않는 수용적 태도’, ‘정서 접촉을 위한 기반 작업’, ‘정서 접촉을 위한 촉진적 개입’), ‘상담에서의 변화에 대한 평가’(자신과 타인에 대한 인지적 변화’, ‘상담에 적극적으로 참여함’, ‘주 호소문제 완화’)라는 3개의 영역과 8개의 범주가 확인되었다. 본 연구 결과는 향후 중년 남성 내담자를 상담하게 될 상담자들에게 실질적인 정보를 제공하고 중년 남성의 특성을 반영한 상담 기법을 개발하는 데 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the experiences of counselors working with middle-aged male clients. we conducted an online survey with 65 counselors who had experience working with middle-aged male clients and held counseling-related licenses. The collected data was analyzed using the Modified Consensual Qualitative Research. The analysis revealed two domains and seven categories regarding the characteristics of middle-aged male clients: ‘Presenting Problems’(which included ‘interpersonal difficulties’, ‘work-related stress’, ‘mental and physical symptoms’, and ‘challenges related to middle age’) and Motivation and Engagement Levels’ (which included ‘level of motivation for counseling’, ‘reluctance to self-disclosure’, and ‘passive engagement’). Counselors’ experiences working with middle-aged male clients were categorized into three domains and eight categories: ‘Challenges in Emotional Processing’ (‘difficulties in emotional recognition and expression’, ‘defense mechanisms in emotional processing’), ‘Effective Methods for Emotional Processing’ (‘non-judgemental acceptance’, ‘foundational work for emotional processing’, and ‘interventions for emotional processing’) and ‘Evaluation of Changes in Counseling’ (‘active participation in counseling’, ‘changes in attitudes toward self and others’, and ‘relief of main presenting problems’).
