본 연구는 1960년대 서구에서 시작된 커뮤니티 아트 운동과 정치적 • 사회적 변화를 촉진하는 데 중요한 역할을 하는 장애예술을 비교 연구하여 사회적 • 문화적 의미를 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 톨스토이의 『예술론』 문헌을 바탕으로 커뮤니티 아트와 장애예술을 고찰하였다. 그 결과로, 주류사회에서 경험하는 소수자들의 사회적 차별, 배제, 억압적인 삶에 관한 주제를 살펴볼 수 있었으며, 포용적 예술로서 쌍방향의 교류와 협업, 그리고 공동체 내에서의 연대와 변화를 촉진하는 것을 공통점으로 찾을 수 있었다. 차이점으로는 커뮤니티 아트는 문화의 민주주의를 가치 있게 여기며 보편적 예술로서 사회적 확장에 중요성을 강조하고 있는 반면, 장애예술은 사회적으로 인지하고 있는 장애의 정체성을 보다 더 확립하고 주체적으로 드러나게 하는 것을 강조하고 있었다. 이는 궁극적으로 장애예술이 사회적으로 성장하고 확장하기 위해 톨스토이의 ‘좋은 예술’의 가치를 더욱 구현하고 예술의 본질적 가치를 재조명하기 위함이며 이를 바탕으로 장애예술이 공공선과 보편성, 소통과 상호작용 등의 주류와 비주류 예술을 해체한 ‘모두를 위한 예술’로서의 지향해야 하는 것을 살펴 볼 수 있었다는 것에 중요한 함의가 있다.
This study aimed to examine social and cultural significance by comparing the community art movement that began in the West in the 1960s with disability art, which plays an important role in promoting political and social change. To this end, community art and disability art were examined based on Tolstoy's 『On Art』. As a result, we were able to examine the topics of social discrimination, exclusion, and oppressive lives experienced by minorities in mainstream society, and we were able to find commonalities in promoting two-way exchange and collaboration as inclusive art, and solidarity and change within the community. The difference is that community art values cultural democracy and emphasizes the importance of social expansion as universal art, while disability art emphasizes establishing and actively revealing the identity of disability as recognized by society. This ultimately aims to further embody the value of Tolstoy's 'good art' and reexamine the essential value of art in order for disability art to grow and expand socially. Based on this, it has important implications in that it allows us to examine what disability art should aim for as 'art for all' that dismantles mainstream and non-mainstream art such as public good, universality, communication, and interaction.
