질적 연구 방법론으로서의 현상학 -독특성과 보편성 사이의 변증법적 탐구 양식-

Phenomenology as a qualitative research methodology：A mode of dialectic study between uniqueness and universality of the phenomenon

현상학은 이념적, 철학적 지향으로서 뿐만 아니라 그러한 지향을 실제적이고 실천적인 연구 방법론으로 원용하려는 모든 종류의 노력들을 망라하는 용어이다. 전자는 주로 철학 내용의 체계로서의 현상학을 말하고 후자는 실천 현상학의 관심이 된다. 실천 현상학의 관점에서 볼 때, 결국 현상학은 현상들에 관한 연구이며, 그것들의 본질적 성격과 의미를 밝혀내고 이해하기 위한 노력이라고 볼 수 있다. 그러한 것으로서의 현상학의 관심은 사물이 우리의 의식 속에서 혹은 경험을 통해서 그 자신을 드러내는 방식에 충실하고자 한다. 현상학에 기반 한 연구자는 체험에 관한 풍부한 기술을 통해서 그 체험 속에 담겨 있는 의미들을 포착하고 드러내고자 하며, 따라서 기본적인 질문은 다음과 같다. 즉, "이런 종류의 경험이 의미하는 바는 무엇이며, 그것은 또한 내게 어떻게 체험되는가?" 이와 같은 질문을 해명하는 데 있어서 실천 현상학은 "반성"과 "글쓰기"라는 두 가지 경로를 활용한다. 이 글은 실천 현상학의 주요 개념들, 논리 및 방법론적 구조들을 살펴보고, 현상학적 연구가 질적 연구의 지평을 확대하는 데 기여할 수 있는 가능성을 탐색하고자 한다. Phenomenology is an umbrella term encompassing both a philosophical movement and a range of research approaches. They regard phenomenology not only as a certain philosophical system but also as a qualitative research methodology. This study tries to discuss and justify the necessity of this second stance (the so called "phenomenology of practice") and to explore some its methodological features. Applied to research, phenomenology is the study of life experiences or lifeworld-the world as we immediately experience it rather than as we conceptualize, categorize, or theorize about it. Phenomenology asks, "What is this experience like?" "How does the living world present itself to me?" In order to answer those questions, the phenomenology of practice suggests two methodological axes of phenomenological research such as reflection and writing. Reflection (thoughtfulness) is the word that most aptly characterizes phenomenology itself and the practice of phenomenological research is the ministering of thoughtfulness. At the same time, phenomenology edifies thoughtfulness through the practice of writing. In sum, this study discusses the dialectic nature of phenomenological inquiry. Phenomenology seeks after overcoming the traditional barrier of the dichotomy between subject and object, theory and practice, life and research, and uniqueness and universality. According to this spirit, we should not confine phenomenology only within a particular philosophical or logical system, but try to appropriate it as our fundamental orientation or style (that is, methodology) with which we explore our world and ourselves.
