“Please pass the mustache.”: Reinterpretation and transformation in American middle-class socialization practice

이 논문은 미국 중산층 아동들이 일상의 사회화 관습을 자신들의 또래 관계 형성과 사회 목표를 달성의 장으로 적극적으로 이용하고 변형하는 과정을 살펴봄으로써, 기존의 사회화 이론을 비판적으로 검토하는 것을 그 목적으로 한다.이 연구에 의하면, 미국 중서부의 한 도시에 위치한 킨더센터라는 프리 스쿨에서의 민족지적 현지조사는 아동들이 어른들의 언어사회화 목표를 수동적으로 학습하기보다는 또래 문화의 주요 사회목표인 권위의 획득과 협력적-배타적 사회관계 형성의 장으로 재해석, 재구성하고 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 창의적 변형은 교사들과의 끊임없는 협상을 수반하였으며, 아동들의 사회화 가치의 조롱과 비판은 교사들의 사회화 관습에 변화를 가져오기도 하였다.따라서 본 논문의 결과는 사회화가 동일한 버전의 어른들을 재생산해내는 일방적이고 단선적인 과정이라기보다는 사회 변화와 새로운 지식의 생산에 능동적 역할을 하는 끊임없는 학습, 시험, 성장의 협상의 장임을 보여준다. This article examines the ways in which American middle-class children participate in and engage with language socialization practices. Detailed ethnographic description of everyday social interactions in an American middle-class preschool shows that rather than passively internalizing adult socialization inputs, children actively reinterpret, transform, and challenge them to address concerns of their peer worlds such as the pursuit of authority and alliance formation and exclusion. The research critically extends previous studies on children and socialization by focusing on children's active use and transformation of cultural resources, thereby shaping their own developmental experiences while at the same time contributing to the reproduction of social order and ideology. The findings of this article contend that unlike the traditional social science view of enculturation as a uni-directional process wherein adults reproduce faithful cultural versions of themselves, socialization is a process of constant negotiation of learning, testing, and growing that plays a dynamic role in knowledge development and processes of social change.
