질적 네트워크 분석을 통한 미국 청소년들의 사회성 발달 연구

A study on the socialization of american adolescents through qualitative network analysis

이 연구는 미국 중서부 지역의 3개 주(Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin)에서 11개교에 수학 중인 청소년 31명을 ‘일반가정 남·여 청소년’과 ‘저소득층 가정 남·여 청소년’의 총 네 개 집단으로 나누어 질적 네트워크 분석(Qualitative Network Analysis)을 실시하고, 연구대상자들이 구성한 사회적 네트워크의 의미와 사회성 발달의 연관성을 탐구하였다. 연구대상을 네 개의 집단으로 나누는 것과 동시에 연구영역 역시 청소년의 사회성 발달에 영향을 미치는 네 개 영역(가족, 친구, 학교 및 연구대상자 지정 영역)으로 구분하여, 각자 네트워크 차트를 완성시키도록 하고 이를 토대로 반구조화 면담을 실시하여 자료를 수집했다. 네트워크 주체의 사회적 네트워크에 대한 자의적인 해석을 유도한 결과 청소년 사회성 발달에 영향을 주는 요인들을 분석해낼 수 있었고 이들의 사회성 발달을 입체적으로 접근할 수 있었다. 이 연구의 방법론적 의의는 질적 네트워크 분석을 활용하여 개인의 사회적 네트워크를 가시화하고 이를 토대로 사회성과 관련된 특성을 파악하는 데 매우 유용한 것이 확인되었다는 점이다. This study utilizes Qualitative Network Analysis(QNA) to look at the socialization process of adolescents who residing in the Mid-west region of the U.S.A.(Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin). In all, 31 students attending 11 different schools were divided into four groups using male, female, low-income family background, average/affluent family background as criteria. The informants were given a social network chart to fill out, which was used as a basis for the following semi-structured interviews. QNA allowed the researcher to see what kind of contacts found entrance into someone's network and where they were placed according to their relevance. QNA was found to be a useful method to gain insight into how adolescents evaluate themselves and their social environment. The interview data from the QNA enabled the researcher to gather information on the structural description of social relations, and by analyzing the network ego's network of contacts, the research yielded information on the characteristics of the structure and function of the network.
