The Effect of an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Training Program on Perception upon AAC and AAC Teaching Efficacy among Myanmar Special Education Personnel

Providing education to children with disabilities in Myanmar faces significant challenges, primarily due to limited resources and a shortage of trained professionals. The special education system is underdeveloped, making it difficult for children with complex communication needs (CCN) to engage in educational and social interactions. Teachers often lack the confidence and knowledge required to implement educational interventions such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This study evaluated the impact of AAC training on the perceptions and teaching efficacy of 19 staff members at an NGO-based special education center in City A, Myanmar. Participants included special education teachers, physiotherapists, paraprofessionals, and administrators working with students who have communication challenges. Using a one-group pretest-posttest design, the study assessed changes in participants’ perceptions of AAC and their teaching efficacy, with data analyzed through dependent sample t-tests. Results indicated a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge of AAC following the training program, which also notably enhanced their confidence in teaching communication. These findings underscore the need for further AAC training in Myanmar’s special education sector.

배경 및 목적: 미얀마와 같은 개발도상국에서 장애 아동에게 교육을 제공하는 것에는 다양한 어려움이 있다. 그 중 한 가지는 장애 아동에게 질 높은 교육 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 전문가의 부족이다. 특히 복잡한 의사소통 요구를 가진 아동들은 일상에서 발화의 어려움으로 인해 교육, 사회적 상호작용 및 활동에 참여하는 능력에서 상당한 제약을 경험하지만, 특수교사들의 전문성 부족은 미얀마의 이러한 아동들을 위한 학습 기회를 제한하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 기관 단위의 AAC 교사 연수를 통해 교사들의 전문성을 향상하고자 하였다. 구체적으로 미얀마 A도시에 위치한 NGO 기반의 특수교육 센터에서 근무하는 19 명의 특수교육 종사자에게 AAC 연수 프로그램을 실행하여 AAC에 대한 인식과 교수효능감에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 방법: AAC 연수 프로그램의 효과를 검증하기 위하여 단일집단 사전.사후 검사를 통해 미얀마 특수교육 종사자의 AAC에 대한 인식 및 교수효능감의 변화 차이를 대응표본 t-검정 및 Excel를 이용한 사전-사후 비교로 분석하였다. 결과: AAC 연수 프로그램에 참여한 후 미얀마 특수교욱 종사자의 AAC에 대한 인식과 교수효능감이 유의적으로 향상되었다. 논의 및 결론: 본 연구 결과는 미얀마의 특수교육 분야에서 AAC 교육의 중요성에 대한 통찰력과 미얀마의 AAC 및 특수교육 분야에 대한 기초연구였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
