본 연구는 저소득층 밀집지역 초등학교에서 방과후학교의 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 연구자는 B시 저소득층 밀집지역에 있는 등대초등학교의 사례를 선정하여 학생, 교사, 학부모와 집단면담 또는 심층면담을 진행하였다. 이후, 현행 방과후학교가 추구하는 교육격차 해소와 사교육축소 문제에 주목하여 이와 관련한 등대초등학교의 방과후학교 의미를 해석했다. 연구결과, 등대초등학교의 방과후학교 의미로, 첫째, ‘풍요속의 빈곤: 저소득층 밀집지역에서 사교육을 떠날 수 없는 이유’를 발견하게 되었다. 둘째, ‘기회속의 배제: 방과후학교로부터의 자발적 배제와 비자발적 배제’ 현상을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로, ‘소통으로부터의 거리: 관계자 사이의 동상이몽’이 드러났다. 이를 통해 연구자는 저소득층 밀집지역의 방과후학교가 다양한 기회와 배려정책에도 불구하고 여전히 이곳 학생들에게 자신의 꿈을 찾아 주고, 즐겁고 안전한 배움터의 기회를 충분히 제공하지 못하고 있다고 이해하게 되었다. 그러나 적극적인 관리와 정성스런 마음이라는 진부한 대안이 저소득층 밀집지역 방과후학교의 참 의미를 실현할 가능성이 된다는 것을 또한 깨닫게 되었다. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the meaning of afterschool programs in an elementary school in a low-income area. Lighthouse elementary school in a low-income area was the field for this case study, and group interviews and individual in-depth interviews including students, teachers, and a parent were conducted. Through the field notes and interview data, three important meanings were revealed. They were also interpreted based on the main purposes of afterschool programs such as closing gaps in education and diminishing shadow education. The meanings of afterschool programs in the school were ; 1) Lack in abundance: the reasons why students in a low-income area are unable to leave shadow education, 2) exclusions among opportunities: volunteering and non-volunteering exclusions from afterschool programs, 3) a distance from communications: 'same bed different dreams' among the persons involved. It was realized through this study that afterschool programs in the school located in a low-income area were not enough to support and explore students' future dreams, moreover, not enough to offer a safe and pleasant learning center, although there were many opportunities and considerate policies.
