An Autoethnography of a Former Elite Athlete's Identity Change during the Career Transition

이 글은 은퇴 운동선수에서 연구자로 변화해가는 저자의 경력전환에 따른 정체성 변화를 자문화기술지를 통하여 기술함으로써 운동선수의 은퇴에 대한 심층적인 이해를 돕고 향후 대안과 정책에 대해 논의하고자 했다. 국가대표 럭비선수에서 학업을 위한 자발적 은퇴, 어학연수, 대학원 진학, 첫 직업으로써의 외국인 유치원 체육교사, 은퇴선수 주제의 박사학위 논문 작성 등을 반성적 글쓰기를 통해 의미를 기술했다. 연구도구이자 연구대상이었던 연구자의 운동선수로서의 삶과 은퇴와 관련된 스포츠경험을 연대순에 따라 기술하고 은퇴 후 경험과 경력전환에 투영된 정체성 변화의 의미를 탐색했다. 은퇴 후 겪은 심리적 변화의 첫 단계는 무지에서 오는 두려움과 오만함에서 열등감으로의 변화를 겪는 시기였다. 둘째, 운동선수로서의 정체성을 벗어던지고 삶의 강도와 방식을 바꾸는 변화가 있었다. 이를 연구자가 대학원에 진학하며 경험한 수학경험과 함께 묘사하였다. 셋째, 은퇴 운동선수에서 유치원 교사로의 경력전환은 사회에서 새로운 역할 찾기이자 운동선수로서 길러왔던 기술들을 활용할 수 없었던 경험이었다. 넷째, 은퇴 운동선수들에 관한 연구를 진행한 박사학위 논문 작성 과정은 타인에 대한 관심과 자신에 대한 반성과 성찰의 기회를 제공했다. 마지막으로 정체성 변화의 은유를 통해 은퇴 후 삶과 정체성 변화 과정의 의미를 고찰하였다. 연구자는 자신의 경험을 통해 국내 스포츠 문화와 은퇴 후 삶을 위한 은퇴선수 지원정책 등에 대해 논의하였고 향후 정책방향과 인식 변화를 제언하였다. This paper describes a former elite athlete's retirement experiences and career transition process through an autoethnography account. The study places importance on the understanding of an individual's life after sport, and through this understanding, it discusses future directions for developing a career transition support system and policy. The author describes his sport experience related to the decision of career termination, studying processes, first job as a kindergarten PE teacher, and then his doctoral dissertation on retired athletes. The researcher, as a research instrument and informant himself, retrospects his sport career and retirement in a chronological order, and subsequently the career transition process which led to the identity change. Its implications and meanings are categorized into five stages. First, I faced the fear of unknown and inferiority complex after terminating my sport career. Second, I strived not to depend on my sport career and achievements with a determined attitude to change life direction and self identity. Third, the stage when I found a new social role and other interests to pursue after becoming a kindergarten teacher and my skills learned from the sport became irrelevant. Fourth, studying the topic of retired athletes and their career transition for a doctoral dissertation was the process of reflection and confiding. Finally, I used a metaphor of the first cleats I bought, which I took for granted during the sports career, to explain and explore my identity change. From my experience and perspective, this paper discusses the sports culture of Korea and aid programs and policies for retired athletes, and discovers new perceptions and viewpoints of elite athletes' life after sport.
