The Life Experiences and Identity of the Post-Doctoral Researchers in Science and Technology

본 연구의 목적은 과학기술계 박사후 연구원의 일상생활과 정체성을 탐구하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 정부출연연구소 가운데 한 곳인 희망연구소 박사후 연구원들을 사례로 연구를 수행하였다. 연구에서 분석한 박사후 연구원의 생활 경험에서 다음과 같은 몇 가지 특징을 나타내었다. 우선 그들은 실험과 연구에 대한 순수한 열정을 가진 사람들이었으나 그들은 더 많은 열정과 노력을 요구받으며 스스로 자신의 전문성을 입증하도록 강요받았다. 또한 그들은 박사후 연구원이라는 임시적이고 불안정한 직업적 위치로 인해 부당한 대우를 받더라도 참아야 했고, 희망연구소에 소속감을 느끼기보다는 소외감을 느끼게 되었다. 박사후 연구과정이 길어지면서 그들이 느끼는 불안과 두려움도 커졌다. 그들은 그들 스스로 부여한 전문적 연구자와 사회적, 직업적 위치에 의해 규정된 임시직이라는 서로 상반되고 모순되는 두 정체성이 혼재되어 일종의 감정적 긴장과 스트레스를 경험하고 있었다. 그들은 그들을 불확실하고 혼란스럽게 만드는 양가적 정체성으로부터 벗어나고자 노력했으나, 그럴수록 그들은 박사후 연구과정이라는 연옥에서 나오기 힘들어졌다. The purpose of this study is to investigate the life experiences and identity of post-doctoral researchers in Science and Technology. In order to achieve the purpose, I have performed a qualitative study through the case of eight post-doctorates at Heemang Institute. I found some features about the life experiences of the post-doctoral researcher, they have lots of passion for their experiments and studies, but they were forced to work hard with more passion and effort and prove their ability on their own. They have endured unfair treatment because they were in an unstable and temporary state. They have not felt a sense of belonging but alienation instead. The long time they spend on their post-doctoral course have caused them anxiety and fear. They have experienced a kind of emotional tension and stress because of their ambivalent identity. Therefore, they strive hard in getting out of their ambivalent identity, which makes them uncertain and confused. Unfortunately, they are confined in purgatory for their post-doctoral course even though they were doing their best.
