Schooling and Shame: Focusing on Educational Environmental Survey

본 연구는 수치심의 감정이 사회적으로 구성된 감정이라는 전제 아래, 가장 주된 사회화 기관 중 하나인 학교에서 학생들이 경험하는 수치심에 주목한다. 저자들은 알튀세르(Althusser)와 부르디외(Bourdieu), 파세롱(Passeron) 등의 논의를 빌려, 학교에서 경험하는 수치심이 학교가 재생산하고자하는 사회적 질서를 조장하기 위한 정서적 매개체로 활용될 수 있다고 주장한다. 이와 관련한 선행연구가 전무한 상태에서, 본 논문은 학교교육과 수치심이라는 광범위한 담론과 행위의 의미화를 가능하게 해주는 지점으로 가정환경조사서를 포착하여 논의를 전개한다. 저자들은 학생들이 가정환경조사서를 통해 경험하는 수치심을 계급, 정상가족 이데올로기, 생명-삶-건강의 범주를 중심으로 논의하였다. 그 결과 학교에서 경험하는 수치심은 권력관계의 비대칭성에 기인하는 사회적 감정이며, 학교는 이를 통해 지배 문화의 가치관을 교육하고 학생들을 이에 순응하게 한다는 것을 밝히고자 했다. This study focuses on the emotion of shame in schooling. Shame is a socially constructed and institutionalized emotion. Following Althusser, Bourideu and Passeron, in this paper we consider the school as a part of the societal system, which aims to reproduce society's order and normality. How do teachers or schools use the emotion of shame? And what are the possible educational effects of this emotion to students? In this paper we argue that shame is arguably the most important emotion in schooling in that it contributes to the construction of a docile and normal student-subjectivity. The subject of our exploration is an academically unexplored territory. In addition, the emotion of shame is so prevalent and deeply permeated in every practice and situation of schooling. In order to map out how we use shame as an emotional medium in schooling, this study explores the implications and effects of the educational environmental survey. In arguing that the survey postulates an ideal constituent of the nation through the image of an upper middle class, westernized, and heterosexual family, and its lifestyle, this study reveals that shame is an artificially promoted emotion that aims to produce docile students.
