The mediating effects of social withdrawal and aggression on the relationship between negative parenting styles and juvenile delinquency: A comparison of real-life and cyber delinquency

This study explores the mediating effects of social withdrawal and aggression on the relationship between parents' negative parenting styles and adolescents' real-life and cyber delinquency. Using data from the 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey, the study analyzed responses from 2,384 middle school third-year students through structural equation modeling and bootstrapping methods to verify the pathways and mediating effects. Multi-group analysis was also conducted to examine gender differences. The results revealed that parents' negative parenting styles significantly influenced cyber delinquency but had no direct impact on real-life delinquency. Both social withdrawal and aggression acted as mediators, with aggression showing a strong positive effect on both types of delinquency. Conversely, social withdrawal had a negative effect on delinquent behaviors while increasing aggression. Gender analysis indicated that boys were more strongly influenced by aggression in real-life delinquency, while no significant gender differences were observed in cyber delinquency. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the psychological mechanisms and gender differences in the relationship between parenting styles and adolescent delinquency.
