오디세이학교: 민관협력 교육의 성과와 함의

The Public-Alternative Schooling Project, Odyssey School

서울시 교육청은 일반고의 ‘교실붕괴’에 대한 해결책으로 2015년 민관협력 기획 <오디세이 학교>를 실행하였다. 본 논문은 7개월 간, 서울시 일반 고등학교 1학년생 40명이 공교육 틀 안에서 대안학교 교육과정을 학습하고, 변화해가는 과정에 대한 참여관찰 연구 결과이며, 그 교육성과를 중심으로 작성되었다. 학생들은 2학년이 되어 원적 학교로 복교할 예정이다. 이 학생들은 성적, 계층, 가족상황 등이 서로 다르지만, 학교교실에서 주어지지 않는 ‘다른’ 자극을 통해 성장하고자 하는 욕구가 강하다는 공통점을 지녔다. 이들은 토론과 글쓰기 중심의 <오디세이 학교>에서의 학습 후, 공부에 대한 새로운 감각을 얻고, 열린 사고와 상대적 사고를 하게 되었으며, 경쟁 없는 학습의 가능성 등을 경험한 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 언급한 변화들이 원적학교로의 복교 이후에도 지속, 발전될지의 여부는 이 기획의 숙제로 남는다. 연구자는 이 숙제에 대한 해결을 위해 정답 맞히기 중심의 교과목 암기를 ‘학습’으로 정의하는 현재의 교육제도와 교육문화에 대한 개혁을 주장한다. 교과지도중심의 현행 교원양성과정에 대한 비판, 생활지도중심의 교원양성을 위한 방안 모색, 이를 가능하게 할 공론장 형성 등도 주장한다. 현재를 유보하는 교육과 학습 이외, 현재의 욕망을 구현하고 실현하는 교육과 학습이 함께 있을 때, 수면실로 변한 교실, 교실붕괴의 현장, 학교가 변할 것이다. The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education implemented an experimental project of public-alternative Odyssey School in 2015 to break through the problem of ``school collapse’ which has been observed for two decades. This article is about the achievement of and reflection on the Odyssey School project, in which 40 Seoul high school students are enrolled and exposed to alternative ways of teaching-learning processes for seven months. Though these students vary in SES and school performances, a commonality they share is that they all carry incessant desires to ‘grow up’ with intelligent stimulations unattainable in public schools. Students are found to transform perspectives on learning and ways of understanding competitiveness as a result of the Odyssey School project. However, whether this change would have an impact on their journey growing up remains as a task to be investigated afterwards. I suggest that there be a thorough reformation in the way the school system defines what is learning. Promoting learners to be open to different answers than having them ‘learn the answer by rote’ should be discussed. Teacher training needs to change accordingly into thought-provoking and facilitation rather than information-banking and testing. It is necessary to have public arenas where parents, teachers, administrators, and students discuss what learning should mean from the stance of students, not of teachers and schools.
