“이게 다 학교 때문입니다.”: 학교에서 새겨진 폭력

“This is all because of school”: Violence Planted by School

이 연구는 학교폭력을 가해자의 관점에서 이해하고자 하는 목적에서 이루어졌다. 이 연구를 위해서 나는 학교폭력 학생이라고 일컬어지는 어느 중학교 남학생 네모(가명)를 1년가까이 참여관찰하고 면담하여 자료를 수집하였다. 그리고 그 자료를 분석하고 해석하여 학교 안에서 학교폭력이 어떻게 대물림되는지, 네모는 학교폭력을 어떤 관점에서 바라보는지, 그의 관점에서 볼 때 학교폭력은 어떤 의미를 지니는지, 그런 점에 비추어 볼 때 우리는 학교폭력을 어떻게 바라보고 대처해야 하는지 등을 이해하고자 했다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 점을 알게 되었다. 네모는 착한 곰과 같았지만, 중학교에 입학하면서 학교폭력의 일상적인 피해자가 되었고, 그 과정에서 학교폭력 학생들이 공유하는 “싸가지”로 일컬어지는 행동 규범을 내재화했다. 그리고 자신이 고학년이 되자 그 규범에 따라서 다른 아이들을 폭행하기 시작했다. 그런 네모에게 학교폭력은 복수이고, 정의의 실현이고, 적응의 기제였다. 네모가 이처럼 폭력적인 학생이 되어가는 데는 네모가 학교폭력의 피해자가 되었을 때 네모를 감싸주고 의지할 수 있는 인물의 부재 그리고 그런 사태를 방치하고 폭탄 돌리기 식으로 문제를 해결하고자 한학교의 조치 등이 연관되어 있었다. 이런 점을 고려한다면, 학교폭력을 바라보는 우리의 시선을 개인의 문제로만 국한하기보다는 공동의 책임으로 전환할 필요가 있다고 생각한다. This study was performed to understand school bullying in the bully's perspective. For this study, I collected data by participatory observation and in-depth interview with a male student, Naemo, who was in 9th grade and was a bully, for about a year. In this study, I tried to understand the mechanisms of occurrence and reproduction of school bullying, the meaning of school bullying in Naemo's perspective, and how we have to understand and prepare meaningful measures regarding school bullying. In terms of personality, Naemo was very docile and kind. After entering junior high school, he has become a daily victim of senior assault and battery and he has learned the rules of “ssagazi.” When he became a senior, he paid back by bullying his juniors based on what he learned through “ssagazi.” School bullying meant revenge, an act of justice, and adaptation for Naemo. The reasons why Naemo turned into a violent kid were having no close and warm relationship with significant others and school's irresponsible and neglectful measures to Naemo's violent behavior. Considering these factors, we need to change our view's on school bullying from it being a problem to a shared responsibility.
