M대학교 학생들의 볼리비아 해외교육봉사활동 전개 방식에 대한 비판적 고찰

A Critical Review of M University Students' Experience of Overseas Educational Service Activities in Bolivia

우리는 이 글에서 볼리비아 해외교육봉사활동의 기회를 가졌던 M대학교 학생들의 경험을 살펴보고 비판적으로 검토함으로써 현재 교원양성 대학에서 교직과목의 하나로 시행되고 있는 ‘교육봉사활동’ 과목에 줄 수 있는 함의가 무엇인지 찾아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 우리는 2017년 1월 중순부터 2월 중순까지 약 한 달 동안 M대학교 학생들의 볼리비아 교육봉사활동에 함께 참여하면서 참여관찰을 하였다. 이후 귀국한 뒤 단원들이 생성한 현지자료를 수집하였고, 가장 많은 교육활동을 한 단원 두 명을 각각 두 번씩 면담하였다. 수집한 자료를 ‘생생 코딩(in vivo coding)’의 방법을 활용하여 분석한 결과 현지에서의 관찰과는 달리, 단원들은 좀 더 나은 교육봉사활동을 위해 그 수행 방식을 변화시키고자 부단히 노력했다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 또한 그 속에는 “알려주는 것”, ‘학습자로의 대상화’로서의 교육봉사활동 개념이 작동함을 알게 되었다. 우리는 봉사(奉仕)라는 ‘단어 자체로’ 돌아가 그 뜻을 비판적으로 고찰함으로써 그 속에는 단원들의 용법, <2017 교원자격검정 실무 편람>, 선행연구들에서 암묵적으로 전제하는 상식적·통상적 의미 외에 ‘아래에 서는 일(under-stand)’로서의 ‘이해’의 의미도 있을 수 있음을 논의하였다. 이를 바탕으로 단원들의 볼리비아 교육봉사활동 경험과 국내 연구물에 나타난 예비교사들의 교육봉사활동 경험을 비판적으로 비교·검토함으로써 교육봉사활동이 나아가야 할 한 가지 방향을 제안하였다. This study aims to discover the significance of the educational service activities that are being implemented as part of the current curriculum at a teacher’s college by critically reviewing the experience of M University students who had opportunities to do volunteer education abroad in Bolivia that could serve as educational service activities. The researchers observed the education service activities of M university students in Bolivia from mid-January to mid-February 2017. After returning home, we collected local materials and interviewed two members who had the most frequent classes twice. Data was collected and analyzed using an ‘in vivo coding’ method. Contrary to local observations, it was discovered that the members of the group constantly tried to change their lessons for the better. Also, it was found that the concept of educational service activity as a “let them know something”, ‘objectification as a learner’ was underlying in the deploying process. Returning to the word “service,” it was found that there might not only be a method used by the members, < 2017 Teacher Certification Practice Manual >, but also the implied common sense and conventional meanings in the premise of prior studies, and the possibility of the meaning of understanding as ‘under-standing’ was discussed. Based on this, the researchers proposed one direction for educational service activities.
