자전적 탐구의 의미와 수행 방법: 자아의 의식-몸-영(靈)에로의 통섭 여정

The Meaning and Methods of Doing an Autobiographical Inquiry: The Consilient Journey of Self from Consciousness to Body and to Soul

질적 탐구에서 자전적 탐구가 활용되는 것은 주로 방법적, 목적적 차원에서이다. 첫째 질적 탐구에서 탐구자는 자료의 수집, 해석, 글쓰기의 주체인데, 이 주관성을 독자들이 타당성 있게 받아 들이게 하기 위한 방법으로 자전적 탐구가 활용된다. 탐구자는 주로 시작과 정리 단계에서 ‘탐구자의 삶의 의미 변화’라는 주제가 설득력 있게 드러나도록 자전적 텍스트를 삽입한다. 둘째 자전적 탐구가 본 탐구활동의 주된 목적으로 실행될 경우인데, 이 때 탐구자는 자기 삶과 정체성에 대한 이해를 목적으로 일관된 탐구를 전개한다. 하지만 이 경우에, 그 수준이 의식적 차원의 이해에 머무르거나, ‘타자 탐구’를 자전적 탐구의 주된 내용으로 포함시키지 않는 경우가 대부분이다. 하지만 이 글은 1) 모든 탐구가 본질적으로 참된 자기 존재성을 찾는 자전적 탐구의 성격을 내재하며, 2) 자전적 탐구는 타자 탐구를 포함해야 윤리적이며, 3) 의식적 차원은 물론, 신체적, 영성적 차원에까지 그 영역을 확대하는 것이 바람직하다고 말한다. 이 글은 의식이 몸과의 대화를 통해 전개하는 자전적 탐구가 어떻게 위의 세 가지 성격들을 완수하는지 소개하면서 자전적 탐구의 의미, 근거, 방법론을 탐구의 전면으로 확대, 재구축하는데 기여하고자 한다. 탐구의 결과는 1) 탐구를 자기 삶의 구성으로 의미화하고자 하는 탐구자, 2) 자전적 탐구를 의식적 차원에 그치지 않고 신체적, 영적 차원으로 확대하면서 참된 자기 존재성을 찾고자 하는 탐구자, 3) 이러한 자전적 탐구를 지도하고자 하는 교육자들에게 도움이 될 것이다. The reason for using an autobiographical inquiry in qualitative inquiry is mainly grounded in the dimension of either method or purpose. First, considering the fact that the inquirer in qualitative setting is the primary subject or instrument of data gathering and analysis as well as writing, it is common for an inquirer to use autobiographical writings at the stages of beginning and ending in order to persuasively resonate to the validity of the inquiry with the readers. Second, in case of implementing an autobiographical writing as the main purpose of the inquiry, it is common to inquire into and reflect on one’s life entirely, the inquiry not only delimits its boundary to the conscious level but also does not include others’ lives as a major part of it. This study argues that 1) every qualitative inquiry is an autobiographical inquiry, 2) an autobiographical inquiry never avoid excluding inquiring into others, 3) and an autobiographical inquiry must include the dimensions of physicality and spirituality as well as the one of consciousness. This paper, based on the epistemological justification, provides the readers with the methodological breakthroughs by which an autobiographical inquiry is successfully carried out. The results of this study is expected to provide an insight to both of the inquirers who wish to bring the process of doing a qualitative inquiry into one’s own life and who want to expand the scope of autobiographical inquiry into the dimensions of physicality and spirituality from that of consciousness.
