Factors Influencing University Students’ Perception of Plagiarism: Focusing on the Need for Ethics Education

This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing university students’ perceptions of plagiarism, identify its key causes, and propose measures to enhance their academic integrity. A survey was conducted with 74 students from a four-year university in Jeollanam-do, South Korea, using a six-point Likert scale questionnaire addressing learner, instructor, and social factors. The results identified insufficient ethics education as the most significant factor contributing to plagiarism, followed by the ease of copying materials using digital devices and information overload. A regression analysis identified a lack of information-seeking skills as the most influential factor affecting insufficient ethics education. Therefore, this finding suggests that enhancing students’ information-seeking and utilization skills can play a key role in addressing the lack of ethics education and maintaining academic integrity. A correlation analysis confirmed that learners, instructors, and social factors are interrelated and collectively shape perceptions of plagiarism. These findings emphasize the need for comprehensive ethics education beyond theoretical concepts to include practical case studies and real-world examples. This study highlights the necessity of comprehensive ethics education and guidelines of the responsible use of AI and digital tools to uphold academic honesty.

본 연구의 목적은 대학생들의 표절 인식에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석하여 주요 원인을 파악하고 학문적 진실성을 강화하기 위한 방안을 제시하는 데에 있다. 전라남도 소재 4년제 대학의 재학생 74명을 대상으로, 학습자 요인, 교수자 요인, 사회적 요인으로 구성된 6점 Likert 척도 설문지를 활용하여 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 윤리 교육 부족이 표절의 주요 요인으로 가장 높게 인식되었으며, 디지털 기기를 통한 자료 복사 용이성과 정보 과부하가 그 뒤를 이었다. 회귀분석 결과, 정보 탐색 능력 부족이 윤리 교육 부족에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 요인으로 확인되었다. 이는 정보 탐색 및 활용 역량을 강화하는 교육이 윤리 교육 부족을 보완하고, 학문적 진실성을 유지하는 데 핵심적 역할을 할 수 있음을 제안한다. 상관분석에서는 학습자, 교수자, 사회적 요인이 표절 인식에 상호 연관되어 작용함을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 포괄적인 윤리 교육과 AI 및 디지털 도구의 책임 있는 사용에 대한 명확한 지침 마련이 학문적 성실성을 유지하는 데 필요함을 시사한다.
