한강의 『채식주의자』에 묘사되는 육식과 채식에 관한 사회언어학적 분석

A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Meat Diet and Vegetarian Diet Depicted in Han Kang’s The Vegetarian

본 논문은 2024년 노벨 문학상을 받은 한강의 채식주의자가 공전의 베스트셀러가 되면서 채식과 그 단어의 상징성에 대중의 관심이 쏠리게 했다는 것에 주목하여, 육식과 채식에 대한 사회언어학적 의미 변화를 추적하고 소설 속에서 육식과채식이 어떻게 묘사되고 변모하는지 분석하였다. 소설 속 비 채식인들은 육식을인간의 본능이고 건강 증진을 위해 필수적이라 주장하며 채식을 선택하는 것은이상하고 고집스럽고 타인을 불쾌하게 만든다고 생각한다. 반면 주인공 영혜는동물에게 가해지는 육식 문화의 폭력을 가부장적 문화 속의 소수자인 자신에게가해진 폭력으로 의미를 확장한다. 소설은 채식을 건강이나 환경 문제로 다루지않으며, 영혜의 채식 선택이유를 폭력에 대한 저항으로 묘사한다. 그러면서도 그녀가 여전히 가해자가 될 수도 있다는 역설적인 상황을 보여준다. 이는 자유로운선택을 가진 소수자가 어떻게 다른 소수자에게 가해자로 변할 수 있는지에 대한깊은 성찰을 제공한다. 이 연구는 육식과 채식에 대한 채식주의자의 언어적표현과 묘사가 단순한 이분법적 구도를 넘어서, 복잡한 사회적, 문화적 논의를여는 중요한 기초가 된다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

Focusing on the increased public attention towards vegetarianism and its symbolic significance following the success of Han Kang’s The Vegetarian, which became a bestseller after winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature, this study tracks the sociolinguistic shifts in the meanings of meat diet and vegetarian diet by analyzing how these phrases are portrayed and transformed within the novel. In the story, non-vegetarians argue that meat consumption is a human instinct and necessary for health, deeming vegetarians to be strange, stubborn, and offending. The protagonist expands the meaning of vegetarianism by relating the violence inherent in meat-eating culture to the violence she experiences as a minority in a patriarchal society. The novel does not address vegetarianism in terms of health or environmental issues; rather, Yeong-hye’s choice of practicing vegetarian diet is framed as a form of resistance to violence. At the same time, the novel presents the paradox that the protagonist may still become a perpetrator herself while resisting violence, which offers a profound reflection on how a minority can become an oppressor to another minority. This study is significant in that the linguistic expressions and portrayals of meat diet and vegetarian diet in The Vegetarian go beyond a simple binary, laying an important foundation for complex socio-cultural discussions.
