A Study on the Relationship between Continuing Education and Ethical Awareness of Dental Technicians

Background: In this study, we aim to investigate the relationship between continuing education and ethical awareness of dental technicians. Methods: A survey was conducted from October 1 to October 10, 2024, targeting 130 dental technicians selected for convenience. The questionnaire consisted of 26 questions in total, including 5 general questions, 8 questions on ethical awareness, and 11 questions on professional ethics awareness. Reliability analysis was performed, frequencies and percentages were calculated, and t-tests were performed. Results: It was found that continuing education for dental technicians had a significant effect on several items of professional ethics. In particular, the group that received continuing education showed a high level of ethical awareness in items that aimed for the right and beneficial work rather than profit and pointed out things that violate ethical standards (p<0.05). ‘Emphasis on the role that must be maintained as a professional when performing work’ (p=0.013), ‘Adherence to set hours in the workplace’ (p=0.000), ‘Tendency to do what is right and beneficial’ (p=0.011), ‘Tendency to point out things that go against ethical standards’ (p=0.000), ‘Behavior aimed at correcting social order’ (p=0.000), and ‘Attitude to distinguish between public and private affairs’ (p=0.040) all showed higher scores in ethical awareness in the group that received ethics education, which showed statistically significant differences. Conclusion: It was found that continuing education has a positive effect on the ethical awareness and professional ethics of dental technicians. Therefore, it is necessary to create a convenient and accessible educational environment by providing various ethics education courses and online lectures during continuing education to strengthen the ethical awareness of dental technicians.
