실행연구(Action Research)의 새로운 과거: 쿠르트 레빈의 ‘action-research’를 중심으로

A New Past of Action Research: from the Perspective of ‘action-research’ of Kurt Lewin

이 연구는 흔히 실행연구로 번역되는 ‘action research’를 사회심리학자이자 사회실천가인 레빈(Kurt Lewin, 1890-1947)의 관점에서 이해하고, 한국의 학교 현장에서 ‘action research’가 어떻게 이루어지는 것이 적절한지 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 레빈은 인간의 행동(behavior)을 과학적으로 설명함으로써 심리학을 철학이나 생리학으로부터 독립된 학문으로서 정립하고자 했다. 그 목적을 위해서 그는 장이론(field theory)을 개발했다. 장은 한 사람의 주변에 놓여있는 물리적 환경과 심리적 환경이 그의 의식 속에서 상호의존적으로 결합된 것으로서, 한 사람의 주관적인 생활공간(life space)을 구성한다. 한 개인의 행동은 그가 어떤 장에 놓여있는가에 따라서 결정된다. 레빈은 이러한 장이론을 바탕으로 집단 간 차별과 같은 사회적인 문제를 해결하고자 했다. 그는 집단 간 관계의 문제 등을 해결하기 위해서는 계획, 실행, 사실-발견의 나선적 순환 과정을 거쳐야 한다고 보았다. 그는 이것을 사회적 실천 또는 합리적인 사회 관리라고 불렀다. 그런데 이러한 사회적 실천이 합리적으로 이루어지기 위해서는 장에 의해서 구속되는 기존의 행동을 변화하도록 해야 하는데, 그것을 가능하게 하는 것을 행위(action)이라고 불렀다. 그런 행위를 찾기 위해서는 장이론을 기반으로 하는 가운데 한편으로는 당사자들을 관찰하고 면담하여 그들의 생활공간을 그들의 관점에서 파악해야 한다. 다른 한편으로는 비교 실험 등을 통해서 그들의 기존 행동을 변화시킬 수 있는 구체적인 행위들을 찾아야 한다. 레빈은 이러한 탐구의 과정을 ‘action-research’라고 불렀다. 레빈의 ‘action-research’는 집단 간 관계에서 차별 등과 같은 문제를 유발하는 기존의 행동을 바꿀 수 있는 새로운 행위를 탐구하는 연구이다. 그러기 위해서 사회적인 문제를 해결하고자 하는 실천가의 기존의 행동을 변화하는 것을 일차적인 목적으로 한다. 실천가들의 행동을 변화함으로서 사회를 변화하도록 하는 것이다. 레빈의 이러한 사회적 실천과 그 일환으로 이루어지는 ‘action-research’는 현재 한국의 학교현장의 문제를 해결하는 데 유용하게 쓰일 수 있으며, ‘아이의 눈으로 수업 보기’는 그러한 사례가운데 하나라고 볼 수 있다. The purpose of this study is to understand action research from the perspective of Kurt Lewin (1890-1947), famous progenitor of action research and social psychology. He was an American social psychologist and social practitioner. This will help us find a way of performing it in Korean school situation. Lewin had tried to establish Psychology as an independent discipline from philosophy or physiology by scientifically explaining human behavior. The Field Theory was his answer to his project. The field is a subjective interdependent construction of the physical and psychological environments of a person. The field constructs his life space and determines his behavior. On the basis of field theory, Lewin tried to resolve the social problems of discrimination between social groups of Jews and Anglo or black and white. He suggests that the spiral process of planning, execution, diagnosis is necessary to resolve the social problem. He called this as social practice or rational social management. The key to resolve the social problem is an action that is able to transform the behavior determined by the field of a person. It is the need to observe and interview the person to comprehend his life space from his perspective. A comparative experiment will let us find out the proper action to change his behavior. Lewin called this process of inquiry as ‘action-research.’ The ‘action-research’ of Lewin is an inquiry exploring an action that can change existing behaviors that cause problems such as discrimination in intergroup relationships into new behaviors. The primary purpose of his ‘action-research’ is to transform the behavior of practitioner. It is a means to change society. The social practice and ‘action-research’ of Lewin would be useful to solve the problems of Korean schools. Viewing from a pupil’s perspective can be a case of Lewin’s ‘action-research’ for Korean school teachers.
