The Nature and Process of Analytical Work in Qualitative Research

자료가 쌓임에 따라 연구자는 자료 분석의 필요성을 느낀다. 자료의 분석이란 ‘현장에서 일어나는 일을 보다 체계적으로 이해하고자 하는 활동’으로서 연구 결과를 구성하는 일과 관련하여 ‘적절함(right)’을 얻기 위한 작업이다. 이를 위해 연구자는 우선 ‘자료가 보여주는 것은 무엇인가?’, ‘코드들, 코드들의 분류, 범주들은 서로 어떻게 관련되는가?’, ‘코드들, 범주들은 자료 전체, 현상 전체와 어떻게 관련되는가?’ 등 3가지 질문과 마주해야 한다. 이 질문들에 대한 답을 찾음과 동시에 연구자가 해야 할 일은 질적 연구에서 분석 작업의 성격과 접근법을 분명히 이해하는 일이다. 나는 이 글에서 자료 분석의 성격을 해석적, 현상학적, 생성적 또는 구성적, 불확실성의 인정과 수용, 자료의 텍스트성, 과정적 등 6가지로 구분하였으며, 접근 방법으로는 에틱과 에믹, 두 가지를 다루면서 에믹한 접근의 중요성을 강조하였다. 이어서 질적 연구에서 자료 분석 시 경유하는 주요 과정을 8개로 구분하여 나의 사례에 비추어 소개하였다. 끝으로 질적 연구의 과정이 학습의 과정이자 경험인 만큼 자료 분석을 ‘배움의 체계화 과정’으로 볼 것을 제안하였다. As data accumulate, the author feels the need for data analysis. Data analysis is “an activity to understand what is happening in the field more systematically,” and it is an effort to acquire “rightness” in relation to the composition of research results. To this end, the author must first face the following three questions: “What does the data present?” “How do codes, classification of codes, and their categories interrelate?” and “How do codes and categories relate to the data and phenomena as a whole?” Concurrently to answering these questions, the author's task is to clearly understand the nature and approach of analytical work in qualitative research. In this paper, the author distinguishes six categories of data analysis: interpretive, phenomenological, generative or constitutive, acknowledgement and acceptance of uncertainty, textuality of data, and procedural. Regarding the approach method, the author dealt with two, Etic and Emic, and emphasized the importance of the latter approach. Subsequently, the main processes for data analysis in qualitative research were classified into eight steps and were introduced in light of the author’s experience. Finally, as the process of qualitative research is the course of learning and experience, it is suggested that data analysis is viewed as “the systematization process of learning.”
