Tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening medical emergency, rarely occurs in patients undergoing a tracheostomy. Despite the safety of tracheostomy procedures, severe complications associated with tension pneumothorax have been reported. Pneumothorax events during and after intubation via the tracheostomy site, while uncommon, have been reported. Therefore, anesthesiologists must understand the mechanism of pneumothorax in patients undergoing tracheostomy to promptly rule out other complications and prepare for further action.
