작가미술관의 공공 교육적 역할과 ‘뮤지엄화’의 조건

The Public Educational Role of Artist’s Museums and the Conditions for ‘Musealization’

본 연구의 목적은 박물관학의 관점에서 작가미술관의 고유한 가치와 공공 교육적 역할을 구현하기 위한 ‘뮤지엄화(musealization)’ 조건을 고찰하고, 작가미술관 건립 및 운영에 적용할 수 있는 함의를 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 작가미술관의 특성과 뮤지엄화 개념에 대한 문헌연구를 바탕으로, 국제적 인지도와 역사성을 지닌 해외 주요 작가미술관의 사례를 분석하였다. 사례연구는 연구 질문에 따라 문헌 자료의 정성적 내용분석을 통해 자료에서 나타나는 경향과 의미를 도출하고 이를 재구성하는 방식으로 진행되었다. 작가미술관은 작가의 ‘예술’, ‘아카이브’, 그리고 ‘복합적 전기’를 통해, 역사적 맥락에서 창의적 개인으로서 예술가를 몰입적이고 총체적으로 경험할 수 있는 독특한 특성을 지닌다. 사례분석 결과, 작가미술관의 공공 교육적 역할은 작가의 예술과 아카이브, 복합적 전기의 풍부한 내용을 기반으로, 연구·보존·소통 기능이 유기적으로 연계되는 뮤지엄화 과정을 통해 수행될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 나아가, 작가미술관의 공공성과 지속가능성을 보장하기 위해서는 공적 운영 체제와 함께 전문적이고 윤리적이며 참여적인 운영이 필요하며, 이를 통해 작가의 자료와 유산이 인류의 유산으로 전환될 수 있음을 밝혔다. 본 연구는 국내에서 증가하고 있는 작가미술관의 고유 가치를 탐구하고, 공공 교육적 역할을 위한 뮤지엄화 조건을 제시함으로써 작가미술관 연구의 학술적 토대를 마련하고, 건립 및 운영에 실질적인 시사점을 제공한 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the conditions of musealization from the perspective of museology to realize the unique value and public educational role of artist museums and to explore implications for their establishment and operation. To this end, a literature review was conducted on the unique characteristics of artist’s museums and the concept of ’musealization‘, and case studies were analyzed focusing on major international artist’s museums with global recognition and historical significance. The case studies were conducted by qualitative content analysis and reconstructing trends and meanings derived from documentary data based on the research questions. Artist‘s museums possess distinct characteristics that allow for immersive and comprehensive experiences of artists as creative individuals within historical contexts through their ’art‘, ’archives‘, and ’complex biographies‘. The findings of the case analysis indicate that the public educational role of artist museums can be realized through the musealization process, which organically integrates the museum’s functions of research, preservation, and communication based on the richness of the artist’s art, archives, and complex biographies. Furthermore, the study highlights the necessity of a public management system, along with professional, ethical, and participatory operations, to ensure the public significance and sustainability of artist museums. Such an approach would enable the transformation of artists' materials and heritage into public cultural assets. This study holds significance in providing a scholarly foundation for the growing number of artist’s museums in South Korea by exploring their unique values and presenting the conditions for musealization to enhance their public educational role.
