머레이 셰이퍼의 사운드스케이프를 통한 초등 교과과정 소리 활동 분석 및 적용 방안 -‘즐거운 생활’ 통합교과서를 중심으로-

Analysis and application of elementary school curriculum sound activities through Murray Schafer's soundscape - Focusing on the integrated textbook ‘Pleasure Life’–

머레이 셰이퍼는 소리 연구와 소리 교육을 주창한 인물로, 소음에 대한 경각심을 바탕으로 소리 환경의 개선을 촉구했다. 그는 두 편의 『소리 교육』을 통해 소리 듣기의 훈련을 강조했으며, 여러 가지 프로젝트를 이끌며 ‘사운드스케이프’를 논의하였다. 그의 소리에 대한 담론은 ‘지속가능성’을 목표로 하는 생태학적 사고와 맞닿아 있는데, 우리가 놓인 소리 환경에 대한 자각은 더 좋은 소리 환경을 만들기 위한 노력으로 이어지기 때문에 생태교육적 측면에서 소리 교육은 더욱 중요시되고 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 셰이퍼의 사운드스케이프를 기반으로 음악교육의 소리 활동 측면에서 보다 체계적이고 효과적인 수업 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 교과서의 소리 활동을 제시하기에 앞서 셰이퍼의 사운드스케이프와 소리 교육에 관한 연구를 살펴볼 것이며, 이를 바탕으로 2022 개정 ‘즐거운 생활’ 통합교과서 소리 활동에 다양한 소리 교육 방법들을 보완하고자 한다. 이를 위해, 초등학생 1학년과 2학년 두 명을 대상으로, '소리 산책', '소리 지도 만들기', '소리 분석', '사운드스케이프 디자인'의 4단계 과정을 총 4차시에 걸쳐 수행한다. 학생들은 각 활동에 참여하며 소리 환경을 직접 경험하고 분석하여 창의적 사고와 비판적 사고를 기른다. 이러한 보완 방안은 셰이퍼의 사운드스케이프 개념을 보다 정확히 이해하고, 교과서 소리 활동의 방향성을 심화·발전시키기 위한 실질적인 방안을 제시하는 데 그 목적이 있다.

Murray Schafer, a proponent of sound studies and sound education, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about noise and advocated for improving sound environments. Through his works, including two pieces on ‘sound education’, he highlighted the necessity of training in active listening and led numerous projects that explored the concept of the ‘soundscape’. His discourse on sound aligns with ecological thinking aimed at ‘sustainability’, underscoring the importance of sound education from an ecological perspective, as awareness of one's sound environment fosters efforts to create better soundscapes. This study aims to explore systematic and effective instructional strategies for sound activities in music education based on Schafer’s soundscape framework. Before presenting sound activities for textbooks, this study examines Schafer’s research on soundscapes and sound education. Using these findings, it seeks to supplement the sound activities of the 2022 revised Integrated textbook ‘Pleasure Life’ elementary school textbook with diverse sound education methods. To achieve this, two elementary students, one from first grade and one from second grade, participated in a four-session program following four-step model: ‘sound-walk’, ‘sound map creation’, ‘sound analysis’, and ‘soundscape design’. Through these activities, the students directly experienced and analyzed sound environments, fostering both creative and critical thinking skills. This study ultimately aims to provide practical strategies to deepen and advance the sound activities in textbooks by incorporating Schafer's soundscape concepts, thereby offering a clearer understanding and enriching the educational framework for sound activities.
