Purpose: This study systematically analyzes the 2022 Revised Moral Education Curriculum in South Korea, highlighting its strengths and areas of critical debates surrounding its development to improve understanding and provide insights for future curriculum revisions. Method: This study conducts a detailed review of the curriculum's structural and conceptual changes. It examines academic literature and policy documents to identify shifts in emphasis. Results: This study found that the 2022 Revised Moral Education Curriculum emphasizes competencies in civic engagement, ecological sustainability, and digital ethics, addressing contemporary societal and environmental challenges. These shifts represent a significant departure from previous curricula, where moral education was primarily centered on traditional virtues and interpersonal relationships. However, despite these progressive changes, concerns remain regarding the feasibility of implementation, the appropriateness of certain content structures, and the need for further refinement in AI ethics education. Conclusion: The 2022 revised moral education curriculum reflects a forward-thinking approach to moral education, aligning with contemporary challenges. Nevertheless, continued academic discourse and empirical research are required to assess its real-world applicability and effectiveness in fostering students’ moral and ethical reasoning. Additionally, further refinements may be necessary to enhance the coherence of content delivery. This study contributes to the ongoing conversation on moral education reform by offering an analysis, and ultimately providing insights for future revisions and educational policies.
