‘나’를 만나기 : 선택적 함구증에 관한 자전적 예술 기반 연구

Encountering ‘Myself’ : An Autobiographical Arts-Based Research on Selective Mutism

본 연구는 한 미술교육자가 아동기에 경험한 선택적 함구증을 성인이 된 후 자각하게 되면서, 기억을 추적해 가며 어린시절의 ‘나’를 만나는 과정을 탐구한 예술 기반 연구이다. 구체적으로 칼 융(Carl Jung)의 개성화 과정에 관한 개념을연구의 틀로 삼고, 아토그래피(a/r/tography)를 통해 선택적 함구증에 관한 기억을 이미지와 글로 생성한 후 분석하였다. 이를 통해, 한 ‘사건’과의 만남을 시작으로, ‘과거와 맞닥뜨림’, ‘선택적 함구증과의 조우’, ‘선택적 함구증을 새롭게바라보다’의 세 가지 주제를 도출하여 논의하였다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 질문을 제시하고자 한다. 첫째, 선택적 함구증이었다는 사실을 성인이 된 후 마주하면서 어떠한 나를 만나게 되는가? 둘째, 나를 만나는 과정에서 어떠한 감정이생성되는가? 본 연구는 성인이 된 연구자가 체화된 기억을 통해 어린 시절의 ‘나’와 만나는 과정을 예술적 방법으로 탐구함으로써 개인적인 경험이 학문적 논의의 장으로 확장될 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.

This study is an arts-based research project that explores the process of an art educator encountering their childhood self by tracing memories after realizing their experience of selective mutism in adulthood. Specifically, Carl Jung’s concept of individuation is adopted as the theoretical framework, and a/r/tography is employed to generate and analyze memories of selective mutism through images and writing. Through this process, three themes are derived and discussed ‘Encountering an Event’, ‘Confronting the Past’, and ‘Engaging with Selective Mutism Anew’. This study aims to address the following questions First, what aspects of the self emerge when facing the realization of having had selective mutism in adulthood? Second, what emotions are generated throughout the process of encountering the self? By exploring the process of the researcher, as an adult, meeting their childhood self through embodied memories using artistic methods, this study holds significance in demonstrating the potential for personal ex periences to expand into the realm of academic discourse.
