Disability Acceptance Process and Marital Relationship Changes in Parents of Young Children with Developmental Disabilities: A Qualitative Case Study

This qualitative case study examines how parents of young children with developmental disabilities experience changes in marital roles and relationships during the disability acceptance process. Cross-case analysis of in-depth interviews with five couples revealed three acceptance stages—(1) understanding and supporting each other, (2) enduring and adapting together, and (3) preparing for the future—and three interaction types: the companion type (mutual acceptance), the leader-follower type (one partner leads acceptance), and the delayed acceptance type (marked by prolonged conflict). Findings underscore the critical role of effective communication and role coordination in successful disability acceptance, providing insights for developing counseling and support programs that strengthen marital relationships. These results highlight the need for tailored interventions to support parents of young children with developmental disabilities.
