Influence of Positive Psychological Capital, College Major Satisfaction, and Grit on Adaptation to College Life in Nursing Students

Purpose: This study investigated factors influencing nursing students’ adaptation to college life, including positive psychological capital, college major satisfaction, and grit. Methods: Data were collected from 219 nursing students between August 19 and September 5, 2024. The data were analyzed using SPSS Windows 29.0. Independent t-tests, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U tests, Pearson’s correlation analysis, and multiple regression analyses were conducted. Results: Adaptation to college life varied significantly by sex (t=−2.73, p=.007), academic grade (F=6.11, p=.003), and health status (F=14.52, p<.001). It was also significantly positively correlated with positive psychological capital (r=.65, p<.001), satisfaction with one’s major (r=.53, p <.001), and grit (r=.46, p<.001). Multiple regression analyses indicated that positive psychological capital (β=.39, p<.001), college major satisfaction (β=.22, p<.001), grit (β=.17, p=.005), and health status (ref=low) (β=.11, p=.028) significantly predict adaptation to college life. These factors have an explanatory power of 48.0%. Conclusion: Positive psychological capital, college major satisfaction, and grit should be improved to help nursing students adapt to college life. Nursing colleges should develop and implement programs to address these personal factors.
