Influence of Academic Stress and Social Isolation on Depression Among Nursing Students

Purpose: This study aims to identify the factors influencing depression among nursing students. Methods: A descriptive cross- sectional study design was used. The participants consisted of 258 nursing students from two universities located in two provinces. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires between October 24 and November 7, 2024. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS 27.0. Results: The results indicated that academic stress (β=.37, p＜.001) and social isolation (β=.46, p＜.001) were significant factors influencing depression. The regression model accounted for 48% of the variance in depression (F=39.21, p＜.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that academic stress and social isolation are significant factors influencing depression among nursing students. Therefore, inter ventions to manage academic stress and address social isolation among nursing students are necessary. These intervention programs should be integrated into the nursing curriculum and provided in a continuous and stable manner.
