The Effect of Positive Parenting Attitudes on Academic Enthusiasm: The Mediating Effects of Attention Issues and Self-esteem
Academic development is a crucial task during adolescence. Identifying the factors that influence adolescents’ academic enthusiasm can help develop effective strategies to enhance it. This study investigated the mediating roles of attention issues and self-esteem in the relationship between positive parenting attitudes and adolescents’ academic enthusiasm. To achieve this, data from 4,311 elementary school children of 5th year (2022) and the youth panel survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018), conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, were analyzed using SPSS PROCESS macro model 6. The key findings of this study are as follows. First, both positive parenting attitudes and self-esteem had a significantly positive effect on adolescents’ academic enthusiasm, whereas attention issues had a significantly negative effect on adolescents’ academic enthusiasm. Second, positive parenting attitudes influenced academic enthusiasm indirectly through attention issues and self-esteem; specifically, attention issues and self-esteem sequentially mediated the relationship between parents’ positive parenting attitudes and academic enthusiasm. Finally, based on these findings, this study discusses the implications of academic counseling for adolescents, acknowledges its limitations, and suggests directions for future research.
