진지한 여가 이론으로 바라본 퇴직 교원의 노년기 자원봉사 경험에 관한 탐구: G 광역시교육청 금빛평생교육봉사단 사례를 중심으로*

Exploring the Volunteer Experiences of Retired Teachers in Old Age from the Perspective of Serious Leisure Theory: A Case Study of the Geumbit Lifelong Education Volunteer Corps at the G Metropolitan Office of Education.

본 연구는 G 광역시 교육청 금빛평생교육봉사단에 참가한 퇴직 교원의 자원봉사 경험을 탐구하는 일반적 질적 연구이다. 연구목적은 Stebbins의 진지한 여가로서 자원봉사활동에 참여하고 있는 퇴직 교원의 경험과 의미를 탐구하는 것이다. 이를 위해 다음과 같은 연구문제를 설정하였다. ‘금빛평생교육봉사단 참여 퇴직자들은 진지한 여가로서 자원봉사활동을 어떻게 경험하고 인식하고 있는가?’이다. 연구참여자들은 69~89세의 퇴직 교원으로 금빛평생교육봉사단에서 2년 이상 자원봉사활동 경험이 있는 5명을 대상으로 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 자료분석은 반복적 비교분석법을 사용하였으며, Stebbins의 진지한 여가 이론을 바탕으로 해석하였다. 연구결과, 연구참여자들의 자원봉사 경험에서 진지한 여가 이론의 여섯 가지 공통적인 특징(인내심, 여가 경력, 개인적 노력, 지속적인 혜택, 독특한 윤리, 정체성)과 일치하는 모습들을 발견할 수 있었다. 이 중 자원봉사 경험과 관련하여 가장 큰 비중을 차지한 영역은 ‘지속적인 혜택’으로 규칙적인 생활을 통한 건강관리, 삶의 활력, 자아만족, 주변 사람들의 지지와 인정 등 개인적 차원의 혜택이 가장 많았다. 본 연구는 노인 인구의 다변화 속에서 적극적인 사회참여의 일환으로 자원봉사활동에 참여하고 있는 퇴직 교원 노인들의 경험과 의미를 진지한 여가 이론을 통해 살펴보았다는 점에서 노년기 활동 이론의 확장과 적용이라는 의의가 있다.

This study is a qualitative study that explores the volunteer experiences of retired teachers who participated in the Geumbit Lifelong Education Volunteer Corps. This study aims to explore the experiences of retired teachers who participate in volunteering as a serious leisure activity. The research question is “How do retirees participating in the Geumbit Lifelong Education Volunteer Group experience and perceive volunteering as a serious leisure activity?” We interviewed five retired teachers, aged 69 to 89, who had more than two years of volunteer experience with the Geumbit Lifelong Education Volunteer Corps. The findings demonstrated that the participants' volunteer experiences aligned with the six core characteristics of serious leisure theory: perseverance, leisure experience, personal effort, lasting benefits, unique ethics, and identity. Of these, “lasting benefits” emerged as the most prominent aspect of their volunteer experiences. This study is significant as it expands and applies theories of aging-related activities by examining the experiences and meanings of retired teachers engaged in volunteer work. It highlights their active social participation and the evolving roles of the elderly population through the lens of serious leisure theory.
