The influence of delirium knowledge, critical thinking disposition, and compassion competence on delirium nursing performance in general hospital clinical nurses: A cross-sectional descriptive study

Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors influencing general-hospital nurses’ delirium knowledge, critical-thinking disposition, and compassion competence on delirium nursing performance. Methods: This research included 193 nurses from three shifts at three general hospitals, each with over 500 beds, in Jeolla Province. Data were collected from January 29 to February 20, 2024. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0, descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The factors affecting delirium-nursing performance, age (β=.40, p=.025) and compassion competence (β=.37, p<.001), explained 32.0% of the variance in the model. Conclusion: The factors influencing the performance of delirium care among general-hospital nurses were age and compassion competence. Policy support and self-coaching programs are necessary to continuously develop nurses’ compassion competence.
