Evaluation of the Third Molar Eruption in Orthodontic Patients with Extraction

This case report evaluated the eruption of mandibular third molars and mesial movement of the posterior teeth in three adolescents who had orthodontic treatment with premolar extraction. Superimposition of CBCT images before and after orthodontic treatment was performed with the mandibular symphysis and lower border as a reference and the eruption of the third molars and orthodontic tooth movement of the mandibular second molar was measured. In adolescent patients, the developing mandibular third molar tooth germ moves mesially, lingually, and upwards after orthodontic treatment with extraction of the mandibular premolars. Despite sufficient posterior molar space, the successful mandibular third molar eruption may vary due to various factors such as the inclination or eruption path of the third molar, the speed of mesial movement of the anterior guiding teeth, and other contributing factors.
