‘영미문학읽기’를 통한 다문화교육 연구: 『진과 대니』를 중심으로

Multicultural Education through ‘Reading English Literature’: Focusing on American Born Chinese

기술의 발달로 지식과 정보의 공유가 활발해지고 우리의 생활권이 국가를 넘어 전 지구적 규모가 됨에 따라 오늘날 문화는 한 사회의 영역에 갇힌 개념에서 벗어나 각 사회의 경계와 틀을 허물고 하나로 잇는 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 다문화 사회가 도래되고 곳곳에서 인종적, 민족적으로 ‘다중적 정체성’을 안고 살아가는 사람들을 마주하게 되지만, 우리 사회는 여전히 그 변화를 받아들이지 못하고 있는 듯하다. 그동안 우리가 다문화를 다뤄온 방식은 각 문화를 있는 그대로 존중하기보다 한국 사회에 ‘동화’할 것을 강요하면서 문화 간 위계와 분열을 조장하는 것으로 다문화 시대에 걸맞는 대응이라고 보기 어려웠다. 이제 민족과 인종, 문화를 비롯해 계층, 성별, 장애인과 비장애인 등 다양한 범주에 속한 모든 개인이 동등한 관계에서 조화를 이루고 공존하는 사회로의 변화를 맞기 위해 우리 교실에서부터 다각적인 다문화교육이 필요해 보이며, 본고는 그 방법들 중 하나로 ‘영미문학읽기’를 통한 다문화교육을 제안한다. 중국계 미국인 작가 Gene Luen Yang의 『진과 대니』(American Born Chinese)는 그래픽 소설로, 학교를 배경으로 미국 사회에서 적응하기 위해 고군분투하는 인종적 소수자 Jin의 서사를 담고 있어 미디어의 발달로 시각적 이미지에 익숙해진 학생들의 흥미를 유발하면서 ‘다문화’를 화두로 이야기 나누기에 적합한 텍스트이다. 인간의 모습을 쫓았던 Monkey-king이 원숭이로의 정체성을 회복하고, 미국인이 되고 싶어 거부했던 중국계 미국인으로서의 자기 정체성을 수용하며 비로소 웃음을 되찾게 되는 Jin의 이야기는 주류 문화로의 ‘동화’가 아닌 다양한 문화들이 있는 모습 그대로 존중받으며 ‘융화’될 수 있는 다문화 사회로의 가능성을 보여준다. 물론 Monkey-king은 인간 세계에서 거부되었고, Jin 역시 또 다른 인종적 타자 Wei-chen과의 관계를 회복할 뿐 아직 다른 친구들과 어울려 지내지 못하고 있다. 하지만 『진과 대니』의 결말에서 보이는 이 같은 한계는 우리 교실에 남겨진 과제로, 적극적인 다문화교육의 전개로 여전히 닫혀 있는 우리 사회를 인식하는 것에서부터 다문화 사회로의 발전적 변화가 일어날 수 있을 것이다.

As our living sphere has expanded beyond national boundaries to a global scale, culture is no longer restricted to the confines of a single society, but plays a leading role in breaking down the boundaries of each society. With the advent of multicultural societies, more people are living with ‘multiple identities’, but our society seems to be unable to accept this change. ‘Multiculturalism’ in our classrooms has been aggravated by divisions between cultures, forcing students to ‘assimilate’ into Korean society rather than respecting each culture as it is, which is hardly a response to the multicultural era. In order to change Korean society, this article proposes multicultural education through reading English literature among other methods. American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang is a graphic novel that tells the narrative of Jin, a racial minority struggling to adapt to American society, making it a suitable educational text for discussing multiculturalism. Jin embraces his identity as a Chinese-American, which he had rejected until the end in favour of becoming an American. His change shows the possibility of a multicultural society in which different cultures can be respected as they are, rather than assimilated into the mainstream culture. Jin is still unable to mingle with other American friends, but these limitations shown in the ending of the story will help us to recognize that our society is, as of yet, still exclusive to a multicultural society and should continue studying ‘multicultural education’.
