Gadamer’s Hermeneutics of Finitude and Moral Education

｢진리와 방법｣으로 대표되는 가다머의 철학적 해석학은 존재와 언어의 사변적 단일성의 구도 속에서 ‘이해’를 존재가 언어로 표현되는 사건으로 설명하고 있다. 언어는 존재의 표현이기는 하지만 존재는 표현과 무관하게 먼저 주어져 있지 않다는 점에서, 존재와 언어는 일방적인 관계를 맺지 않는다. 원상에 일방적으로 의존하며 언제나 이차적 지위에 머무는 모상과 달리, 철학적 해석학에서 언어는 존재를 드러나게 하며 이해될 수 있게 한다는 점에서 존재의 증대를 가져오는 것으로 그 지위가 격상된다. 이해는 보편자로서의 존재를 이해 당사자의 특수한 지평에 ‘적용’하는 행위로서, 이 일에 참여할 때 이해 당사자는 존재가 언어로 나오도록 하는 적절한 말을 찾는 일을 하게 된다. 언어는 존재의 무한성을 유한한 방식으로 표현한다는 점에서, 존재를 표현하는 새로운 언어를 끊임없이 찾도록 하는 추진력을 내포한다. 어렵게 찾아낸 언어가 지양되고 다시 새로운 언어가 모색되는 변증법적 부정성의 과정을 통하여 이해 당사자는 인간 유한성을 경험하게 된다. 가다머의 철학적 해석학은 이해가 이론과 실제를 가로질러 인간 삶의 모든 국면에서 좋은 삶을 추구하는 실천이라는 점을 보여주고 있다는 점에서 탁월한 도덕교육이론이라고 할 수 있다.

In Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics represented by his magnum opus Truth and Method, there holds a speculative unity between being and its presentations of itself, which contains a distinction that is really not a distinction. Language as being’s self-presentation does not one-sidedly depend upon being in that being is not something that is pregiven before language; rather, language gives being its own determinateness in which there occurs an increase in being. The ontological relationship between being and language is thus not the same as that between original and copy. In philosophical hermeneutics understanding is accordingly explicated as an ontological event in which being comes into language. In participating in this event, the interpreter endeavors to apply the universal (i.e. being) to his particular horizon in the sense that he seeks the right word that really belongs to what he tries to understand. Language is the medium within which an infinity of meaning is represented in a finite way, and which thus has its own impetus to get the interpreter involved in constantly responding to the infinity of wishing-to-be-said. What he ultimately experiences in the dialectic process of understanding is a radical negativity and human finitude. Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics is itself an excellent theory of moral education in that it shows that understanding is a practice of pursuing the good in every phase of our living.
