한자 구성요소 ‘火’의 의례적 의미 확장 분석 ―《說文解字》 小篆을 중심으로 한 한자구형학적 고찰

An Analysis of the Ritual Meaning Expansion of the Chinese Character Element “火” — A Chinese Character Structure-Based Study Centered on the Xiaozhuan Forms in Shuowen

본 논문은 한자구형학과 인지언어학(개념적 혼성이론, 개념적 환유) 이론을 바탕으로,《說文解字》소전 자형 중 구성요소 ‘火’를 포함한 ‘槱’, ‘尞’, ‘烄’, ‘烝’, ‘焌’, ‘灼’, ‘��’, ‘燋’, ‘燭’, ‘爝’ 등 10개 자형을 선별하여, 구성요소 ‘火’의 개념적 의미 확장 양상을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 각 자형에 내재된 ‘火’의 의미가 고대 중국의 제사, 점술, 의례 문화와 어떻게 결합되어 다층적으로 확장되고 있는지 살펴보았다. 곧, 인지적 의미 확장 기제를 통해 ‘火’가 자연 원소에서 출발해 하늘에 제물을 태워 바치는 행위(槱, 尞, 烄), 불기운으로 신을 받드는 예식(烝), 귀갑점을 치는 점술행위와 도구(焌, 灼, ��) 등으로 의미가 넓어졌으며, 횃불과 촛불 등의 의례 도구(燋, 燭, 爝)로도 발전해 의례 질서를 유지하고 신과 인간을 이어 주는 매개물로 기능한 것을 볼 수 있었다. 본 논문은 의례와 관련된 10자만을 분석함으로써, ‘火’를 포함하는 모든 자형을 포괄하지 못한 한계가 있으나, 이에 대해서는 향후 후속 연구로 보완할 예정이다. 또한 갑골문과 금문 등 고문자 자료로까지 범위를 넓혀, ‘火’의 의미망에 고대 중국인의 사유체계와 문화적 관념이 어떤 과정을 거쳐 자형에 반영되었는지 더욱 심층적으로 논의하는 것을 기대한다.

This study applies Chinese character structure analysis and cognitive linguistics (conceptual blending theory and conceptual metonymy) to examine the xiaozhuan forms in Shuowen Jiezi that incorporate the structural element “火.” Focusing on ten characters (槱, 尞, 烄, 烝, 焌, 灼, ��, 燋, 燭, 爝), it explores how “火” intertwines with ancient Chinese rites, divination, and ceremonial culture, forming a multilayered conceptual domain. By applying cognitive mechanisms of meaning expansion, this study reveals how “火” evolved from a natural element into a ritual symbol, encompassing burning offerings (槱, 尞, 烄), fire-related ceremonies (烝, 焌, 灼, ��), and ceremonial implements like torches and candles (燋, 燭, 爝). Although limited to ten religiously linked characters, future research will extend to additional script forms, such as jiaguwen and jinwen, to further explore the cognitive and cultural evolution of “火” in the Chinese writing system.
