The participation of global value chain can not only promote regional economic growth but also contribute to the improvement of total factor productivity and spatial spillover of a country. Using static and dynamic spatial Durbin panel models and data from China Industrial Enterprise Database, China Customs database, interregional input-output table of 30 Chinese provinces, and China Science and Technology Statistical Yearbook, this paper measures the spatial spillover effects of global value chain participation of 30 Chinese provinces and regions. The empirical results show that GVC produces both intra-regional and inter-regional spillovers to total factor productivity. Product embedding has significant spatial spillovers to regional productivity, while function embedding presents localization spillover characteristics due to the relative closure of service chain, complexity and specificity of knowledge composition, and spatial spillovers are not obvious.
