『개역개정』역 삼상1장 15절의 오역 가능성 제기

Possibility of a Translation Error in 1 Samuel 1:15 of the Revised New Korean Standard Version

본 연구는 『개역개정』판의 사무엘상 1장 15절 한나의 기도 후반부에서, ‘여호와 앞에 내 심정을 통한 것이오니’의 ‘통하다’ 번역이 적절한지 여부를 판단하고자 이 구절을 다른 한글, 영어, 중국어 역본 들 뿐 아니라, 히브리어 원문 등과 함께 자세히 비교하여 살펴보았다. 비교연구 결과, 『개역한글』과, 『개역한글』의 후속버전인 『개역개정』판을 제외하고 그 어떤 성경번역본도 삼상1:15절 후반부를 ‘통하다’라고 번역하지 않고, ‘쏟아놓다’ 혹은 ‘털어놓다’라고 번역한 것을 확인하였다. 유독 『개역개정』판 만이 왜 ‘통하다’라고 번역하였는지 그 이유를 찾아내지는 못하였지만, 적어도 그렇게 번역한 근거가 충분하지 않음이 확인되었다. 또한, ‘통하다’의 의미가 성경 원문이 지니는 본의와 상당한 거리감이 있음도 여러 근거를 통해 밝히며 『개역개정』 성경의 번역 오류 가능성을 제기한다.

The present study aims to determine whether the translation of "통하다" (to communicate) in the latter part of Hannah's prayer in 1 Samuel 1:15 of the Revised New Korean Standard Version is appropriate. To this end, this verse was carefully compared with other Korean, English, and Chinese versions, as well as the Hebrew original text. The comparative study results showed that, except for the Revised New Korean Standard Version and its predecessor, the Korean Revised Version, no other Bible translations rendered the latter part of 1 Samuel 1:15 as "communicate." Instead, they translated it as "pour out" or "spill out." Although the exact reason why the Revised New Korean Standard Version uniquely translates this part as "communicate" could not be determined, it was confirmed that there is insufficient basis for such a translation. Additionally, several pieces of evidence indicate that the meaning of "communicate" is somewhat distant from the original meaning in the scripture, raising the possibility of a translation error in the Revised New Korean Standard Version.
