Developing an AI and Digital-Technology based Course for Pre-service Art Teachers

Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop a course for pre-service art teachers to understand the characteristics of AI and digital technology and explore and implement its educational applications. Method This study defines the direction for curriculum development based on the literature review about AI and digital based education. Drawing upon an analysis of teacher education programs and survey examining pre-service teachers' perceptions and needs concerning shifts in educational landscape, this study suggests a structured framework for curriculum's content and pedagogical methodologies. Results In this context, this study incorporates topics such as ethical use of AI, maintaining user agency in the use of AI, proactive and resilient attitude toward challenges, continuous efforts toward personal and professional growth and the design and implementation of technology-integrated lessons into the curriculum for pre-service art teachers. Conclusion Along with expectations for the integration of AI and digital media in art education, concerns have also been raised regarding the subject's identity. Accordingly, teachers need clear guidelines and justifications for the educational application of AI and digital technology in art classes.
