국제자원활동 경험의 생애사적 이해: 라오스의 두 현지 자원활동가를 중심으로

Biographical Understanding of International Volunteering Experience: Focusing on Two Local Volunteers in Laos

본 연구는 국제자원활동 논의에서 소외되었던 현지 자원활동가의 경험에 주목하고자 했다. 이를 위해, 국제자원활동 모델로서 기능해 온 쑴쏜 청년센터를 사례로 선정하고, 이 청년센터의 역사성과 정체성을 공유하고 있다고 판단되는 1세대 현지 자원활동가 무안과 콘왕을 연구참여자로 설정하였다. 연구자는 세 차례의 현지조사를 통해 참여관찰과 면담을 수행하였고, 이를 바탕으로 무안과 콘왕의 생애사를 재현하였다. 이를 통해 영어를 배우려는 소년 → 자원활동가 → 청년센터 대표로 변화하는 정체성을 발견한다. 이는 첫째, 국제자원활동 경험이 자기이해와 주체성 형성을 통해 실천적 지식을 구축한다는 점을 분석하였고, 둘째, 연구 과정에서의 성찰을 통해 무안과 콘왕이 쑴쏜 청년센터를 재운영하기로 결심한 점은 생애사 연구가 성찰적 방법론으로서 교육과정적 의미가 있을 수 있음을 보여준다. 그러나 연구의 한계로서, 무안과 콘왕의 경험이 국제자원활동에 국한되지 않으며, 다양한 경험들이 중첩되어 있음을 성찰하게 된다. 더불어 다양한 국가의 현지 자원활동가들을 포함한 연구가 필요함을 제안한다.

This study aims to highlight the experiences of local volunteers, who have been participated in international volunteering. To this end, the study selects Muan and Konwang, first-generation local volunteers of Zumsun Youth Center. The researcher conducted three field studies and this study reconstructs the life histories of Muan and Konwang, revealing an identity transformation from a boy eager to learn English → a volunteer → a youth center director. From an curriculum perspective, the study draws two key implications. First, international volunteering experiences contribute to self-understanding and the formation of subjectivity, ultimately leading to the construction of practical knowledge. Second, through the process of reflection, Muan and Konwang decided to re-operate the Sumsum Youth Center, demonstrating the role of life-history research as a reflective methodology with educational significance. However, this study acknowledges its limitations, as Muan and Konwang’s experiences are not solely limited to international volunteering but are shaped by multiple overlapping experiences. Furthermore, the study suggests the need for further research involving local volunteers from various countries to deepen the discussion on the distinctive characteristics of their experiences.
