This study aimed to assess recent water pollution levels in the tributary streams of the Yeongsan river and evaluate their compliance with living environment standards for river water, as well as the need for water quality improvement. Water quality monitoring data from 2021 to 2023 at 41 sites within the Yeongsan river basin, provided by the Ministry of Environment's Water Environment Information System, were collected and analyzed. The evaluation of water quality in the tributary streams of the Yeongsan river identified several sites requiring improvement. These included the Gwangju-2 site in the upper area, Hwangryong-5 site in the Hwangryong river area, Gomakwon-4 site in the Gomakwoncheon area, Pyeongdong and Jangseong-2 sites in the middle area, Jiseok-4 and Daechon sites in the Jiseokcheon area, Sampo-1 and Muan sites in the lower area, and Yeongam-2 site in the Yeongamcheon area. Furthermore, the tributary streams within the Yeongsan river basin exhibited poor water quality in areas near urban and industrial zones, livestock farms, agricultural land, or other environmental factors contributing to the direct or indirect inflow of non-point source pollutants. To improve water quality in the main channel of the Yeongsan river, it is essential to reduce the impact of pollution from surrounding tributary streams and designate special management zones to control non-point source pollution.
