This study examined the effect of parenting attitudes on executive function in children with developmental delays or those at risk of disabilities, and analyzed the mediating role of autonomy. The participants were mothers of children aged 5 to 7 who were attending inclusive kindergartens or developmental therapy centers. The results showed that positive parenting attitudes were positively correlated with both autonomy and executive function, whereas negative parenting attitudes were negatively correlated with executive function. In addition, autonomy was found to have a significant mediating effect between positive parenting attitudes and executive function, but not between negative parenting attitudes and executive function. Despite limitations such as recruitment from specific settings, a cross-sectional design, and reliance on maternal self-report, the findings suggest that both parenting attitudes at home and play therapy in clinical settings may significantly influence the development of executive function and autonomy in children with developmental challenges. Future research should investigate the effectiveness of parent education programs based on play and explore how specific play therapy techniques contribute to the development of executive function.
