지방 대학 실용음악학과 운영에 관한 질적 연구

A Qualitative Research on Operational Challenges of Applied Music Departments in Local Universities

이 연구는 지역에 위치한 실용음악학과가 가질 수밖에 없는 한계에 대한 문제의식에서 비롯되었다. 수도권에 비해 사정이 열악한 실용음악학과의 운영상 어려움을 찾고 대안을 모색하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위하여 질적 연구의 심층면담 기법을 사용하였다. 전임교수 2명 학생 11명을 연구참여자로 선정하였고 1년 6개월간 녹음한 인터뷰를 자료를 텍스트화하고 코딩 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 지역의 학령 인구 감소로 인하여 비용의 문제가 제기되었다. 학교는 비용을 절감하기 위하여 정원과 수업을 감축하고 학과를 통합 또는 폐강하면서 수업의 불균형이 발생하였다. 불균형의 양태는 수준, 편제, 학령, 수업 방식으로 나타났다. 학생 모집도 대학교의 교수가 고등학교와 학원을 찾아가는 방식으로 변화하였다. 교수는 연구 또는 학생의 교육에 매진하기 보다는 학과의 항존을 위해 힘을 쏟게 되는 구조를 낳았다. 학교 및 지역 문화예술 관계 기관은 대중음악 문화에 대하여 수용하고 선호할 수 있는 공감대 조성을 위한 제도적인 고민을 해야 한다.

This study aims to identify the operational challenges faced by applied music departments that are in a more disadvantaged position compared to those in the capital region and to explore alternatives. To achieve this, qualitative research was conducted using interviews. Two full-time professors and eleven students were selected as participants, and the interviews recorded over one and a half years were transcribed and analyzed through coding. The result indicated that the decline in the school-age population in the region raised cost issues. In order to reduce expenses, schools reduced enrollment and classes, and consolidated or eliminated departments, leading to imbalances in classes. The imbalances manifested in terms of level, curriculum, age group, and teaching methods. Recruitment methods have changed to a more proactive approach, with schools and professors visiting schools and academies. This has led to a structure where professors focus more on preserving the department rather than dedicating themselves to research or student education. Local cultural and arts foundations and related organizations need to consider institutional efforts to create a consensus for accepting and appreciating applied music culture.
