본 연구는 Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) 토픽 모델링 기법을 활용하여 한국 영어 교육에서 영자 신문을 교수 자료로 활용한 연구의 동향을 분석하였다. 체계적인 검색과 선별과정을 통해 학술지 27편의 논문 초록으로 구성된 코퍼스를 구축하고, 이를 LDA로 분석하여 잠재적인 주제 구조를 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 다음과 같은 다섯 가지 주요 주제가 확인되었다: (1) 영어 자료를 활용한 읽기 지도 및 학습자 참여, (2) 자기주도적 및 전략 기반 학습, (3) 작문과 영어 동아리 활동을 통한 표현 기능 중심 수업, (4) 교수 효과성에 대한 실험 연구, (5) 초등 영어 교육에서의 프로젝트 기반 학습. 주제 간 거리를 시각화한 결과, 주제 1~3은 교실 참여와 기능 통합을 중심으로 한 교수-학습 관련 핵심 주제를 형성한 반면, 주제 4와 5는 특수 목적 및 맥락 중심의 주변 주제로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 영자 신문이 인지/언어적 발달과 학습 동기를 동시에 지원하는 다기능적 교수 도구로 활용되고 있음을 시사한다. 방법론적으로는 LDA 토픽 모델링이 단편화된 연구 결과를 통합하고 전통적 문헌 고찰로는 포착하기 어려운 잠재적 연구 흐름을 도출하는 데 유용함을 보여주었다. 교육적으로는 다양한 교수 맥락에서 실제 자료(authentic materials)를 효과적으로 통합할 수 있는 시사점을 제공하였다.
This study investigates research trends in the use of English newspapers as instructional materials in Korean EFL education through Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling. A corpus of 27 journal article abstracts was constructed through a systematic search and screening process, and analyzed using LDA to uncover underlying thematic structures. The topic modeling analysis identified five distinct themes: (1) reading instruction and engagement with English-language materials, (2) self-directed and strategy-based learning, (3) output-oriented instruction through writing and English clubs, (4) experimental studies on instructional effectiveness, and (5) project-based learning in primary-level English education. The inter-topic distance map revealed that Topics 1-3 form a pedagogical core focused on classroom engagement and skill integration, while Topics 4 and 5 represent more peripheral yet specialized domains. These findings suggest that English newspapers serve diverse instructional functions, supporting both cognitive-linguistic development and learner motivation. Methodologically, the study demonstrates the utility of LDA topic modeling in synthesizing fragmented research and identifying latent patterns not easily captured by traditional reviews. Pedagogically, it offers insights for integrating authentic materials into EFL instruction across educational contexts.
