Objectives: This research investigates the impact of verbal abuse on adolescent mental health, focusing on social anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, self-esteem, and suicidal thoughts. Methods: Survey data from 1,936 adolescents enrolled from 2017 to 2023 in the Speak Without Fear program in Daejeon, South Korea, were analyzed. Participants completed self-report measures including the Korean Version of the Verbal Abuse Questionnaire, the Korean Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents, the Reynolds Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Structural equation modeling was used to assess the relationships among the variables studied. Results: Verbal abuse significantly correlates with higher levels of social anxiety, PTSD, depression, and suicidal thoughts, and inversely affects self-esteem. Structural equation modeling showed a good fit (χ2=34.426, df=3, goodness of fit index=0.993, normed fit index=0.995, Tucker- Lewis index=0.976, comparative fit index=0.995, root mean square error of approximation= 0.074), indicating that verbal abuse impacts mental health outcomes both directly and indirectly through diminished self-esteem and increased psychological distress. Conclusion: The pathways obtained as a result of this study highlight the need for targeted interventions to mitigate the impact of verbal abuse, and these interventions improve mental health resilience in adolescents. These findings address verbal abuse and its psychological consequences, and provide insights for developing policies and educational programs for prevention.
