Background: Ethical competence is essential for physical therapists in clinical decision making and patient care. However, the absence of defined cut scores in the Ethical Competence Self-Assessment Tool for Physical Therapists (ECSAT-PT) limits objective interpretation. Methods: This study reviews the necessity of establishing performance standards for the ECSAT-PT. It explores two widely accepted standard setting methods the Extended Angoff method and the Body of Work (BoW) method to evaluate their suitability for determining meaningful and valid cut scores. Results: The Extended Angoff method, compatible with Likert-scale instruments, provides a systematic approach to estimating expected performance for minimally competent individuals. The BoW method, which assesses performance holistically, is particularly effective for distinguishing lower competency levels. Applying these methods enhances the reliability and validity of ethical competence evaluations. Conclusion: To ensure accurate interpretation and practical application of ECSAT-PT scores, appropriate standard setting methods must be adopted. Implementing the Extended Angoff and BoW methods can help establish objective benchmarks for assessing ethical competence among physical therapists.
