The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction is a process that converts carbon monoxide (CO) and steam (H₂O) into carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen (H₂), and is widely utilized as a downstream process for hydrogen production from synthesis gas with various compositions. This study summarizes recent domestic research on Cr-free Fe-based catalysts that can effectively convert high concentrations of CO in synthesis gas derived from waste gasification, and that can replace the Cr of commercial Fe-Cr catalysts used in the high-temperature water-gas shift (HTS) reaction. The catalytic performance and characteristics of Fe-based catalysts under waste-derived synthesis gas conditions are comprehensively reviewed, focusing on cases involving Cu or Ni doping, the use of Al₂O₃ or mesoporous Al₂O₃ as supports, various catalyst preparation methods such as co-precipitation, sol-gel, and impregnation, and the application of spinel ferrite catalysts.
