Orthodontic pain is one of the most common and unavoidable side effects caused by an orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic pain can often cause patients to hesitate or quit orthodontic treatment. This article reviews the existing literatures to explore the causes and mechanisms of pain caused by an orthodontic treatment and to suggest the pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic methods to manage orthodontic pain.
