지평리 전투(砥平里戰鬥)는 중국인민지원군이 발동한 ‘제 4 차 공세’ 가운데 저명한 전투 중 하나로, 중국 측은 적보다 수배 많은 병력을 집중하여 UN 군 1 개 연대를 포위 섬멸하려 했으나, 사흘에 걸친 격전에도 성과를 내지 못하고 철수할 수밖에 없었던 전투이다. 지평리 전투의 결과는 ‘제 4 차 공세’ 및 향후 한국전 전체 흐름에 매우 중대한 영향을 미쳤고, 고위 결정권자들의 전략적 사고 전환을 가져왔다. 본 연구는 비교적 상세하게 지평리 전투의 발발 배경, 중국 측 고위 결정권자와 전장 지휘관들의 지평리 전투에 관한 전략 수립, 부대 배치 및 지휘 실행에 대해 분석하였다. 지평리 전투와 관련한 문헌은 학계에서 연구에 활용할 수 있도록 부록으로 첨부하였다.

The Battle of Chipyong-ni is one of the most notable battles of the "Fourth Offensive" launched by the Chinese People's Volunteer Army. The Chinese attempted to surround and destroy a UN regiment by concentrating several times more troops than the enemy, but were forced to withdraw after three days of fierce fighting without achieving any results. The outcome of the Battle of Chipyong- ni had a very significant impact on the 'Fourth Offensive' and the overall flow of the Korean War, and brought about a change in strategic thinking among high-ranking decision makers. This article analyzed the background of the outbreak of the Battle of Chipyong-ni in relatively detail, the specific circumstances of the strategy formulation, unit deployment, and command execution of the Battle of Chipyong-ni by high-ranking decision makers and battlefield commanders on the Chinese side. The relevant documents are attached as an appendix so that they can be used in academic research.
