The impact of ESG fulfillment on intangible assets: A comparison across corporate types

본 연구는 ESG가 기업 활동의 핵심으로 자리한 것에 주목하였다. ESG가 재무나 투자 분야에서 활발히 연구되고 있으나 무형의 가치로 논의된 경우는 드물다. 이에 본 연구는 기업의 ESG 이행이 기업명성에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 살펴보고, 기업형태(사기업 vs. 공기업)에 따른 차이를 규명하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 연구를 위해 사기업과 공기업 각 2곳을 선정하여 온라인 설문조사를 진행하였다. 연구결과, 공중은 기업이 단순히 ESG를 이행한다고 해서 이를 긍정적으로 평가하지 않았으며, ESG의 각 요소 별로 기업명성에 미치는 영향은 차별적이었다. 또한 ESG 활동에 대한 진정성과 적합성 인식은 ESG 활동 평가를 높이는 요인이었으며, 세부 활동(환경, 사회, 지배구조)에 따라 그 영향이 차별적으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 기업형태에 따른 유의미한 차이가 확인되었다. 이를 바탕으로 ESG 이행과 관련해 학술적, 실무적 관점에서 논의하였다. 이 연구는 무형의 가치로써 ESG의 중요성을 역설하였으며, 관련 연구의 지평을 넓혔다.

This study focused on the importance of ESG in corporate activities. Although ESG has been actively researched in the fields of finance and investment, it is rarely discussed in terms of intangible value. Thus, this study aims to empirically examine the impact of corporate ESG fulfillment on corporate reputation and identify differences based on corporate type (private vs. public). For the study, two private companies and two public companies were selected, and an online survey was conducted. The results showed that the public did not evaluate companies positively simply due to their ESG fulfilment, and that each element of ESG has a different impact on corporate reputation. Additionally, perceptions of authenticity and fit in ESG activities were factors that enhanced ESG activity evaluations, and their effects varied depending on the specific activities (i.e., environment, social, and governance). Finally, significant differences were observed depending on the type of company. Based on these findings, the study discussed academic and practical perspectives related to ESG fulfillment. This research emphasised the importance of ESG as an intangible value and expanded the scope of related research.
