느린학습자 자녀를 둔 어머니들의 모호한 상실 경험에 관한 질적 연구

A Qualitative Study on the Ambiguous Loss Experiences of Mothers of Slow Learners

본 연구는 초등학교 고학년 느린학습자 자녀를 둔 세 명의 어머니들이 살아낸 모호한 상실 경험을 정리하고, 이들의 목소리를 통해 필요한 지원의 방향을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구는 질적 사례연구의 방법론을 활용하여 약 1년 6개월간의 현장 참여와 세 차례의 심층면담으로 질적 자료를 수집하였고, 에믹코딩을 이용해 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 어머니들이 자녀의 비전형적인 발달을 조기에 인지하였지만, 명확하지 않은 진단 및 개입 방향으로 인해 부정적인 정서를 경험하면서 이들의 모호한 상실이 시작되었다. 그러나 연구참여자들은 자녀를 느린학습자로 받아들이면서 모호한 상실에 대처하고 적응하는 방향으로 행동을 전환하였고, 이 과정에서 회복탄력성이 두드러졌다. 이들은 모호한 상실을 해소하기 위해 가정, 학교 및 사회 차원에서의 지원을 필요로 했다. 본 연구는 기존 논의를 정리하여 느린학습자의 정의를 재구성하였고, 모호한 상실 이론을 적용하여 연구참여자들의 경험을 총체적으로 해석하였다. 이를 바탕으로 느린학습자와 가족을 위한 지원체계 구축의 필요성과 정체감 모호성의 완화를 위한 실천적 함의를 제시하였다.

This study aims to illuminate the voices of three mothers raising upper elementary school-aged children identified as slow learners. Using a qualitative case study approach, data on the lived experiences of ambiguous loss and the identification of the necessary support were collected. Approximately one year and six months of field participation, highlighted by three in-depth interviews with each participant, were needed to construct meaning out of the data, which were analyzed using emic coding. The findings reveal that while the mothers recognized their children’s atypical development early on, the lack of clear diagnoses and intervention triggered the onset of ambiguous loss. However, as they came to accept their children as slow learners, they shifted toward coping and adaptation, demonstrating notable resilience. The participants also expressed the need for support across home, school, and societal contexts to alleviate the ongoing experience of ambiguous loss. This study redefines the concept of slow learners by synthesizing previous literature and applies ambiguous loss theory to provide a holistic interpretation of the participants’ experiences. The results draw attention to the need to establish a comprehensive support system for slow learners and their families, as well as practical implications for mitigating identity ambiguity.
